Self-hosting
post

Spurned on by a bunch of things happening online I decided to take back a little ownership of my presence on the internet and self-host some things.

As a person who ran Linux as their main machine a long time ago, I do have enough sysadmin chops to set this thing up and make it behave in a reasonable way.

This blog is no longer running on GitHub pages, and is on a small VPS hosted in Canada. Look, I understand that it is almost impossible to avoid online surveillance especially with the power of the United States. Hosting my material in Canada instead of a US-based service means I only have to comply with Canadian laws.

Second, I have migrated away from the awesome PHP community Mastodon instance and are now running a single-user GotoSocial instance hosted on the same VPS running this blog.

I don't know what other things I might run on this VPS but I am sure something will catch my eye and I will try it out. I had initially thought of just using the VPS to host a reverse proxy and tunnel stuff running in my house into it. That sounded like a level of work I did not want to do.

Maybe I will get to it on another day.
